How reliable are the engines int he 997s?

Postby HalM3 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 5:49 pm

We found a 2007 Porsche S Cabriolet we like but concerned about engine failure. Dealers won't talk about it but also won't extend the warranty. Opinions.

The 2007 are better but still get a aftermarket warranty

M97 is much better in terms of reliability. porsche addressed lots of the issues in M96 with next Gen motor. I haven't heard about too many failures.

Diane got her 2008 BMW Z4 M. We drove the 911 S's and they didn't feel as quick and nimble has the Z4. I have permission to get an older 911 as a toy. Still like the 964 C2 if anyone knows of one for sale.

After we sell the Z3 for 10ish I'll start looking for the 964. Want to spend about 17-20K for a nice example.

Hal- Excellence magazine had pretty good articles in June & August 2010 on the IMS M96 issues, detailed what Porsche changed over the years, and offers up fixes. The M97 is an evolution of the M96, whereas the 2009+ engines are totally different and don't have an intermediate shaft.
