I've never taken one apart but have looked at cutaway drawings. Looks like the solenoid is an electric plunger similar to a huge electric door lock but instead of locking and unlocking a door it lifts the armature on the starter so it will engage the flywheel. There is also a relay involved since you are activating it with a low voltage switch, ie the ignition. I think the FLAPS have a testing machine to hook it up and see if it is the solenoid or the starter motor.

FLAPS = Friendly Local Auto Parts Store
Like Autozone in Santa Clara. They have a machine and will test it for free.
Hey, if the thing is shot then why not. But you might as well take it somewhere to be tested. How much is a solenoid?

Hey, if the thing is shot then why not take it apart, unless doing so makes it so it has no core value. But you might as well take it somewhere to be tested. How much is a solenoid?

Take the solenoid apart. Usually the large washer that makes contact with the terminals gets coroded or lumps of copper on it. Clean it up and it should work fine. If that is not the prob, get a new one.........
Bye for now as I have to work on the new SPBOX......
