UHAUL 10' box truck (Chevy van with a 6.0L V8) and UHAUL open trailer. It works fine and tows well but it isn't cheap or convenient.

I have my '01 F-350 diesel.
Open trailer.

I have a cool lead on an enclosed trailer.
I want to set it up for camping with a generator, a/c, etc.

This crazy ol' rig. Seems to work ok. But I have flipped the axles on the trailer shortly after the photo was taken. Makes for much easier loading.

2005 Toyota Land Cruiser & 2002 Carson 16' open steel trailer (dual axle, electric brakes)

This rig works really well for a light car like the 914. I can barely feel it. Although, an enclosed trailer would be nice from the standpoint of leaving some of the stuff inside and not having to load/unload for each trip.

2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crewcab Work Truck with 4.8 liter V8. 5'8" bed with shell. Great cheap hauler. And its a nice truck to drive! More than adequate for open trailer and 2500 lb car.

Plus:

Easy to drive
Great gas mileage for a big V8 truck 15 MPG average towing and 19 MPG average not towing. I see over 20 MPG on long trips.
Sports car like handling and traction control system - traction control is better than systems on my Japanese sports cars!
Amazing value for sub $20K crewcab truck

Minus:

4 speed tranny isnt a good match with small high reving Chevy V8. Dont get me wrong the truck scoots but when towing its always kicking down to gear that feels way too low when climbing hills. Truck is either hauling As$ or creeping along when going up steep hills.

If I were to invest in nice truck for hauling bigger enclosed trailer I'd opt for 6 speed and 6.2 liter V8 or Diesel. But those trucks are spendy!

If I ever get back into it will use the 56 F-100. Used one like it for the Seca Solo events in the 70's
